There is something about the cat’s eye that has made it a timeless make up look. A simple sophisticated flick of liquid liner on the eye paired back with lashings of mascara create a wide eyed, classic look that is at home with a nude lip as it is a bold coloured pout. Use a steady hand and think old Hollywood glamour.

Carmine, also called cochineal, is a red colored pigment that is commonly found in lipsticks, eyeshadows, blush, bronzers and sometimes illuminaters and highlighters. Also referred to as Crimson Lake, Natural Red 4 or E120, carmine is sourced from the Cochinal beetle.
Cochinal beetles are native to South America and Mexico and live as parasites on cactus plants. The red pigment is found in the shells of the female insects and in order to extract it, thousands of insects are collected and placed into bags in order and killed by either being immersed in hot water or boiled in steam or gas ovens. They are then crushed and boiled in a sodium carbonate or ammonia solution to obtain the red acidic pigment left behind.. Yes, your favourite shade of red lipstick is manufactured with the body of a creepy, crawly little bug.

I remember when Lush first opened here in Australia. You could smell the store from around the mall corner- it would make my eyes water, my nose itch and I would have to stifle back hay fever sneezes. It was all bath bombs that you would buy for Christmas for that aunt you never saw, it was daggy and left a bad after thought on my 13 year old mind.
Over 15 years later I still hadn’t given the brand a second thought until I switched to a vegan lifestyle. It is hard to ignore Lush Cosmetics as a vegan- their company ethics mirror our own and they use their success to create real change globally.
